So now we know!
No problem on the cap, I would have thrown it out sooner or later anyway, looks a lot better in the pic than in person.

Awesome help. That really answers all my questions. Thanks gents.

Wait - one more question - what solution did you come up with for removing the caps from the wheels?

I filed a small notch on the outer edge of the hub cap so I can get a screwdriver behind it. I touched it up with chrome paint. It's not even noticeable.

I did the required trim of the tabs of two with a drimel, i made it all nice and flush and the same thing happened on both. They have a lot of play and will easily come out. On the 03' center caps the wire circle is smaller meaning that it doesn't apply enough pressure when pushed inside..

Well I've come to the conclusion that its because this mod was for the Factory Reproductions and all of ours are Detroit's. So anyone who recently purchased 22'' reps I couldn't get the caps to fit by cutting off the 5 tabs..

Thanks for the update. I didn't try that mod for the my 22 reps cuz I don't want the OEM centers with the rivets on my new reps. I'm holding out till I can find suitable Harley Decals (sized like I want) at a local dealer or elsewhere. Eventually, they will materialized....for me patience is the key

what exactly do you want with the HD decal?

have you looked into the 00-01 center caps? They're smooth like the replica caps with no rivets, but the center design with the HD logo doesn't look as "cheap" as the replica ones. Its sort of a laser envraged HD logo.

I don't have anything specific in mind yet, and I haven't seen any at a dealer or eBay that really move me.

Haven't really taken a good look at the 00-01 caps. They won't have the same fitment issue as the 02-03's, which by-the-way IIRC were suppose to have fit well on the earlier Detroit rep's after modding the tabs?

i had just noticed this this past weekend. i got a buddy of mine to cut off the tabs and they just fell right in. i could spin them while they were on the rim. made me kinda mad. the alignment tabs make it too big, and if you cut them off, it's too small.

A friend of mine grinded down the tab to where it would fit then modded the spring to where it bends outward a bit more so the fit is tighter. you may want to give that a try.

the 00-01 caps should fit right on the reps with little to no modding IIRC.
