New JLP Aluminum Airbox & New Style Ram Air! (Comparison & Pics!)

So I got the opportunity to checkout the new aluminum JLP intake airbox, and the new style ram-air setup from Johnny Lightning. I already have owned the older steel JLP intake airbox and old style ram-air setup, so I'm writing this post on a comparison between the two to show the improvements made between the two setups.

I just wrote a fully detailed how-to with 25+ photo's on installing the new JLP Aluminum Intake & New Style Ram-Air in the how-to section located here....
How To: JLP Ram Air Intake (New Style)

This post will just summarize the differences & improvements, for more detail shots of the new kit, checkout that how-to thread

Old Setup:

Here is a photo of the old setup. Definitely a nice kit, never had any issues of mine, and I'd still HIGHLY recommend purchasing one if you find any in the classifieds. The old style had a steel box, and the scoop mounted below the bumper. I cut the lower flange off my scoop to gain another inch clearance as seen in the photo, but never really had any issues scraping with how I had it mounted (how-to on the old style coming soon).

New Setup:

Here is a photo of the new setup. It has definitely taken a step above and beyond on the quality, fit, & finish. And I'm not just saying that! The new box is aluminum instead of steel so its a bit lighter. The seams are full welds instead of tack welds so its stronger, the finish is powdercoated so it will hold up great, and the fitment of everything was spot on! The lid is also drilled aluminum instead of a stiff mesh screen material so its more sturdy and looks nicer. Also with the scoop now mounted behind the grille instead of under the bumper, ground clearance is no longer an issue, and its 10x's more hidden than before.

Comparison:

Here's a number of various shots of the two different kits.

New kit on left, Old kit on right.

Just a cool lil feature, the new filters have their website on the end

Old style had a metal tube for the scoop to mount into.

New style has the flex tubing the entire way to wrap around to behind the grille

Old style steel box with tack weld seams.

New style aluminum box with full weld seams.

Old style mesh steel lids.

New style drilled aluminum lids.

Old style ram-air with scoop under the drivers area of the bumper & visible from a few steps back.

New style ram-air with scoop behind the drivers area of the grille & nearly invisible from a few steps back.

Old style ram-air box. Still a sweet looking setup, and definately recommend getting one if there's any in the classifieds! But I'd also recommend considering upgrading to the new kit if you want to bling things up a bit more. Also the new-style ram air kit will work with the old-style airboxes, so you can mix & match as you please!

New style ram-air box!

Since I have the old style ram-air setup still laying around, I plan on hooking up sort of a dual ram-air setup. The hole in the drivers fender that feeds the airbox currently just sits open, so what I think I'm going to do is re-route the scoop from behind the grille and wrap it across and up into the fender into that opening, and then run a modified older style ram-air to the bottom inlet on the box from under the bumper. I'll have to mess around with it though because my new dual pass heat exchanger is in the way of re-using my old style ram-air setup for the scoop.

As for the effectiveness of the new scoop location, I'm sure some will be wondering how well it works with the couple additional bends in the tubing before going to the airbox. Well watching my IAT1 temps carefully, I think at most its only affected it by 5*. Now keep in mind, last time I drove my truck it was in the cooler spring weather, and so far the only time I've driven my truck on the new setup is in 90*, 95*, and 100* weather! But on the old setup I'd usually see IAT1's of only a couple degree's above ambient temps once moving. With the new setup (but in this HOT azz weather) I've seen IAT1's typically 7-10* higher than ambient. Hopefully this heat spell breaks soon, and I can get a better comparison. Keep in mind too, despite the extra bends, the scoop is now getting cooler air from up higher instead of hotter air down inches above the aslphalt, and also its front and center on the truck getting a ton of air forced into it, rather than tucked down and behind the front bumper somewhat not directly in the airflow of the truck.

Anyway, sorry for the long post, but hope you guys enjoy the comparison and find it helpful!

In doing my own ram air set up with the JLP box i noticed that the air tube gets crunched under full tilt of the sterring wheel. I have 295-45-20. have you seen the same problem?

Its just braided covering. Checkout Hoffie's thread in this section, he posted links to info for all the braided coverings for our trucks.

I'll mention it to Johnny next time I talk to him. Seeing what JDM charges for one is frigging ridiculous! JL is busy with the shop, racing, his trucks, KB stuff, etc., but maybe modifying or creating an intake for the saleen trucks could be a winter project

Checkout my how-to link at the top. I'm guessing you didn't use the "L" bracket to secure the hose? If your tire is rubbing it the hose is mounted wrong. I've got the same 295/45/20 tires and a 3" front drop and in the last 2-1/2 years I've never ONCE rubbed the ram-air hose. I've rubbed the fender, the sway bar, the wheel liner, pretty much anything possible with my drop and larger tires LoL! but never rubbed the ram air hose!
