Detonation

I was talking to guy recently about our engines and the detonation issues they have
he said one of the main causes is the exhaust port is to small

anyone heard of this ?is it true?

Nope, not at all.

Detonation issues are a crappy tune, or lackthereof with increased boost and poor gas.

You still having issues you didnt' get fixed yet?

The exhaust ports being too small and the restriction in the #3 port lead to blown plugs, but not detonation.

Bottom line, make sure you get a good tune from a reputable tuner if/when you increase boost and you shouldnt have much to worry about. What pulley combo are you planning on running?

I don't think the exhaust ports cause any issues with plugs blowing out since even N/A trucks have issues blowing plugs just as frequently, with the same exact heads and manifolds, and guys have run the stock manifolds up to 600 RWHP. I don't think the exhaust is really a restriction causing plug issues, or detionation issues for that matter. If anything the coolant path could be a possible one for detionation, guys do the coolant crossover mod to improve cooling to decrease the chances for detionation, but thats still in more extreme conditions. sprster's truck is pretty stock with basically just a 4 lb lower (2 lbs of boost), and some exhaust mods that don't gain any power.

Thats going to bite you man! Detonation is something that is cake to fix, a simple adjustment of the tune, and it can bite you HARD if you dont get it sorted out, especially in the winter with cooler temps and crappier quality gasoline. You're playing with fire. Bet you didn't even get a wideband yet did you?

It doesnt do it all the time but when it does it usually happens during WOT shifting to third it is usually fine in first or second but 80% of the time when she hits third it starts
the A/F is around mid tens when it happens

Pretty fat/thick for detonation! IMO, you have a bad gauge or something else goin' on. Get it in to your tuner.

if you're seeing 10.0's on the A/F gauge, you've either got a detonation problem soley on the passenger bank where the A/F isn't monitored, meaning a bad/clogged injector or something (very unlikely), or its not detonation your hearing. Detonation doesn't happen at 10.0 A/F's, thats rich as chit! Did you calibrate your wideband correctly?

well if your wideband shows 10.0 and you have detonation, like I said its either an isolated issue on the other bank, or that wideband is calibrated wrong. Either way I wouldn't be using that shop again!
