Post Looking to buy a HD but which one?

Located in Houston TX

I am looking to buy me a HD but thought i would ask the people who know best. ( HD owners)

i was looking both into the

2002 HD 4dr Supercharged
2007 HD 4dr Supercharged

so my big question what is.. what are the pro and cons of the two. ?

the reason for super charged is that i got used to the power of the 2001 ford lightning and well would like to get some of that feeling but also get the space from the HD.

Welcome to the site!

If you want to mod the truck and gear it more towards speed and performance, get the Gen 1 HD (02-03). Its the same exact engine as the L, same mods will work for it, it just has a larger upper pulley to net 2 lbs less stock. The Gen 3 HD's with the saleen s/c (07-08) can be modded a little, but can't handle too much boost or abuse. With the 3V heads, the pistons are notched, so not only does it have the same crappy rods, but the pistons become a weak point as well. Not to mention they weigh a good amount more, but it seems like you don't really want to take a Gen 3 above 10 lbs of boost, where a Gen 1 you can take it to 14-15 pretty safely, with less weight, and better performance.

Now if you're geared more towards creature comforts, the Gen 3's seem to be a notch above the Gen 1's in refinement and comfort.

Long story short, if you miss the power of your L and want to mod, get the 02-03 HD. If you want more of the comfort and styling with just a little pep but nothing crazy, then get the 07-08 HD.

I am partial to the 2003...for obvious reasons. To help you out here are my points:

1) Go for a 2003 instead of a 2002, as the 02 is notorious for popping plugs...if you really want the 02 for the DSG color, just remember about the plugs...if I am not mistaken it is becuase they have less threads than the 03 version (I am sure someone will chime in to clarify if I am mistaken in any way)

2) I don't like the new body style that Ford went to after 2003...the boxier look is just not for me, so as of now, if I am going to buy another HD truck its going to be another '03 unless Ford does something to really spark my interest

3) Coming from a lightning....go for the 02 or 03 as Josh said. Its the same engine as the L, just doesn't have that upper pulley...so you already know what to do, to make her what you want.

4) You will find so many parts for the 02 or 03 out there in the classifieds in here or on some of the other boards as like myself, many of us are going built and selling off the performance parts we had before, that we don't need anymore.

5) '03's are the FASTEST!!!!

yeah to expand on what oki said, the 2003's have 8 threads per spark plug well vs 4 threads in the 02's and prior. A few early build 03's still had 4 threads, but majority were 8, so its a little more stout against launching plugs.

And oki brought up another good point too, the classifieds on here and NLOC make modding a Gen 1 much easier on the wallet since so many parts are available for great prices off the classifieds. The Gen 3's there's a limited aftermarket available for the saleen setups, pretty much the only two options are the JDM kit or the Troyer kit, and the JDM one is way overpriced and the Troyer one seems to take months to get.

Damn Bradshow, I thought you were taking her with you?

As everyone has posted, 2003 HD have the 8 thread heads and the 2002 have the 4 thread heads and pop the plugs if you do not torque them right. The newer ones are too heavy and like #356 stated can't handle that much boost.
