Blackwood door handle install 'HOW TO" with pictures

For you guys planning to do this mod, it is pretty easy but I was taking pictures anyway so why not share them

STEP 1: Read this link on how to remove door panels http://nhtoc.com/vbforum/showthread....&threadid=4142

special thanks to mitch5170 for the pix and Flatout_Krazy for install help

STEP 2: Remove retainer bar (2 screws). DO NOT FORGET TO PUT THIS BACK LATER!! Then gently peel off the vapor barrier to gain access to the door handle

STEP 6: Push out the stock door handle assembly, gently rotate it so you can clear the opening (you will have to study how it SNAGS so you'll figure out how to twist it)

That is my old unit with the CHEAPO stick-ons

STEP 7: Now you can unhook the assembly (again, rotate the assembly to disengage the SHEPHERD'S HOOK shaped end of the rod). Now bring out the blackwood piece and attach it to the rod. Good idea to keep the protective film over the chrome piece during the install

Finish the install by REVERSING the steps above. A word of caution here: the bottom of the assembly have barbs/teeth. Make sure you gently push it in so it seats flush with the opening. If you don't, it will look like this and you will have to do everything over. PLEASE don't ask how I know this!!!

Steps for the REAR are essentially the same except for the door panel removal. You will need to unclip a plastic trim by the window so you can access a 4TH SCREW!

Plus another DIFFERENT step to unhook the rod from the door handle assembly. Look for a GREEN plastic piece where the rod is attached. You need to SLIDE THIS UP so you can successfully remove the assembly

and saved the BEST FOR LAST, Ford did away with the key opening in the front passenger door for '02-up models.
I have a second key opening in my '01 but the blackwood piece does not come with one. After a few PMs from FlatOutKrazy & Harley #356 to confirm the above, I decided to MCGYVER a fix.
I used a ZIP TIE to anchor the rod that was attached to the key tumbler to one of the members of the door frame. Gave it some slack so it can still move up and down when the doors lock, Plus also made sure it does not interfere with the power windows. Have driven around and no rattling inside....THANK GOD THIS FIX WORKED!!

    Nice Work Kromdom!

Excellent pics too! I forgot to add the info about the plastic trim piece and the 4th screw for the back doors, thanks for catching that!

Great thread. Got a question about the stick on ones. Did they start looking bad or did ya just have some extra mod money lying around.

The stick-ons worked pretty fine for me. Have to admit that the blackwood's are much better (OEM fit & finish, better chrome) but they were pricey.
Then JOSH messed everything up by offering a driver's side unit for a steal. After deciding to buy that, had to get the other 3.

Paid about $40 for front (each) and $90 for rear (each). Got it from a dealer in Vegas (Signature Lincoln Mercury)
