Yeppers, I barley put any pressure on it, just enough to keep it from sliding around and scracting the paint on the bumper. I used the recomended epoxy... the medallion came off with the HD logo in the epoxy and the sanding marks that I made to rough up the surface. You guys got it to work, so I will try again with another nut...

Go to the Ford dealer and buy the stock plastic bumper hole plug, drill 5-6 holes in the dome part that you would be looking at when it is installed. Clean the self adhesive tape off of the back of the medallion, squirt about 2 tablespoon's of two part epoxy in to the back of the medallion and mix. Take the stock hole plug and flip it upside down in to the epoxy as if all were upside down and twist it around a little. Have a rag handy with some lacquer thinner on it to clean up any excess that get's onto the front. Let it sit upside down for a couple days and then install. I drilled a hole in mine from underneath and installed a cotter pin as to prevent it from being lifted to easily..

    Also i used epoxy
Some got on the thread so i couldnt tighten tho bolt all the way and had to use 2 washers.
after 30 mins of drying i couldnt move the nut
    I didnt sand the medallion
Just took the sticky stuff off (which came off in one piece and left no sticky behind)
let epoxy drive for 6 hours and it was good to go

    Design Variation?

I did mine a little different...

I bought a hex-head bolt, slightly larger than what you guys are using.

I epoxied the hex-head end of the bolt to the cap cover.

I then addded a washer between the hex head end and the bumper, and a washer under the bumper.

When I tighten it down, the hex head contacts the black part of the hitch hole, and the cover is raised slightly above the bumper.

    The advantage is two-fold...

    1) Since the cover never touches the paint, There is less chance of scratching the paint.

    2) Since the hex-head touches the black part of the hole, I can tighten the bolt as tight as any other bolt. Slightly better theft protection...

2many, did it work this time? I only let it cure for 24hrs.. hasn't fallen off yet. :-)

    HarleyDammitt,
That's a good idea. Especially if your bumper is in good shape. I'll have to keep that in mind if I see a new cover I like.

Well I just got in from the HD dealer in Miami and bought my gas cap medallion to do this mod. I've been looking on this board to see what other people had done for a hitch cover. I'm glad I came across this thread a few days ago.

I just did this mod and I love the way it looks. I went to Walmart and bought a cheap tire patch kit with a large patch to keep from scratching the paint. I used the same install method as everyone else, and cut a hole in the patch to fit it around the nut. Then I just trimmed the outer edge with a razor knife. It worked perfect and you can't tell the patch is there. I'll post some pics this weekend.
