How To: Secure Hitch Hole Cover

Ok I know this is by no means a new mod. I've seen a thread or two on this and really liked the look. But from what I've read most secure their cover with sticky tape. I'm not a huge fan of sticky tape, so this is what I came up with. If someone else has posted this method, please ignore mine.

    Parts needed:

    1 - Tube Loctite Metal/Concrete Epoxy
    1 - Tube Loctite Threadloc
    1- 3/4" x 1" Bolt
    1 - 3/4" Nut
    1 - 2" Washer
1- Harley Davidson Gas Cap Cover.

Once adhesive is removed, mix up the epoxy on a peice of spare cardboard or paper plate. (I just used the package it came in. ) BECAREFULL NOT TO GET ON ANYTHING THAT YOU DONT WANT STUCK FOR GOOD. I don't recommend doing this project on the dining room table. Keep a bottle of acetone on hand just in case.

Apply epoxy to center of cap cover and to nut and place nut in the center of the cap cover. Push together firmly to squeeze out excess. Then apply epoxy liberally but thinly around the base of the nut. Once your happy that the nut is centered and has enough epoxy, let sit for 24hrs to cure for max strength.

Ok. Now you simply take the bolt, add washer, add loctite and screw into cap cover. Do not over tighten. I would tighten as much by hand then add a very small amount of turn with a wrench or ratchet to make snug.

    The final product.

You could even add sticky tape to the underside of the cover to act as a barrier between the cover and the bumper paint.

    Nice little how-to.

1 question from a non-motorcycle person. Are all gas tank covers from HD the same size?

The one's I saw at the Harley Dealership looked like it. But since I wouldn't be surprised if they weren't all the same size.

So to answer your question, I'm not sure.

There are definately a handfull of different designs that are the same size as the one I have pictured. All are very sharp. It took a bit of time to decide on one.

    Here's a link to view.

I am in the Harley shop at least twice a month and they all appear to be the same size, but never measured them.

I ended up taking the stock plug cover/insert and epoxying it to the medallion and simply putting it back in the hole. For a little deterrent to the thieves I drilled a hole into it and inserted a clevis type pin.
