    where to buy an alternator

I think my stock alternator is on it's way out.
35K miles on the truck. For the last few months it's been pushing an E-fan, a modest system and so on.
Now when I'm sitting in gear & idling at a light or at a drive through or whatever, the gauge will dip with the bass & the radar detector chimes "low volt" at me.
    Soooooo
what should I get & where?

at night when you have the lights on, do they dim when stopped or at idle? Do they brighten up whenyou rev the gas? If so I would say it was the alt. If not then it could be the battery.

hook up a voltmeter to the batter posts with it running and see if it is putting out 14+ volts

with it idling, soon asI hit the AC, which triggers the e-fan, everything dims a lot and if I let it idle, it eventually (30sec - a min) sags to where the bass will trigger the radar detector's low volt alert.
soon as I raise the RPMs everything brightens up noticably

    http://www.pa-performance.com/

    www.powermastermotorsports.com

both have direct fit alt's for the 2000, 2001, 2002-2003 S/c'ed trucks each are a little different.

Also, with the alt acting so skittish... time for a battery at the time of the alt swap for good measure.

    Good luck!

    Larry,

You might want to take the truck to Pep Boys or Autozone so they can check to see if the alternator is going bad. From what you described though, it does sound like that's the case. I also agree with Rob W. to get a new battery as well. Go with an Optima. If you have a lot of aftermarket accessories that draws a lot. Stereo, lights, etc...I would go with the Optima Yellow Top. If not, you can use the Red Top.

Larry, I would personally go with the 200 amp Powermaster. That is a rock solid high amp alternator. If you want to check to make sure it is your alternator, go out and start the vehicle, once it is idling, disconnect the battery (be careful) and then turn on all of your accessories. If the truck dies, its the alt, if not, its the batt. And you can get Optimas cheap at Costco...

Doing that on an ecu controlled vehicle thats pretty sensative to voltage spikes and drops is kinda scarey. In the old days of points and condensors it was a damn good, cheap and easy way to check the alt, I wouldnt do it to any of my vehicles though.

The voltage spikes can't be any worse than what he is getting now with all of the lights dimming and such.

Edit and to answer your original question:

    http://store.summitracing.com/defaul...=400345&Nao=90

    Part# PWM-47781 (updated)
    $419.95

Hit the check your application toward the bottom. It looks like it fits almost all the big truck applications.

OOOOppps called Powermaster...new part# is PWM-47781 for $419.95 (Summits price)

Summit's description doesn't say anything about the L or the HD, still 200 amp and a 2G case????

Edit: talked to Summit and Powermaster again, Summit says they don't show an application for the L or HD and Powermaster (Gene) says that 47781 is the alt you need.

    Powermaster: 865-688-5953
    Summit: 1-800-230-3030 or 1-330-630-3030

    $420??!!!
    no way on that one
looks like the PA for $260 is gonna have to work

    $420 for an alt
    $125 for the optima tray
    ~$150 for the battery

$700 just aint in the cards - not with the trip to Torrie's coming up soon and the biggest reptile show & sale in the world coming next month in daytona too....

Try doing dual Optimas, Wranglernw dual battery tray with isolator, 200 amp alt and all the other goodies....now that gets expensive quick...(for my 4x4...still not finished yet)

I did the stereo comp thing when I was in my early 20's.
Built a tray to hold 6 group 8 deep cycle yacht batteries under my truck, had dual 200 amp kicker alts, etc etc.
7000 watts and 12 kicker 15"s were a hungry mix.

That's why I thought this would be relatively cheap!
