Angry Cracked Windshield - AAARRRRRGGGG! HELP!

I received a chip while following a salt truck from 300yds back. Thought I was far enough?!?! No problem right, patch it as soon as I get home. Bad problem, crossing a mountain pass on the way home!! The cold wind gust cracked it from left to right. Insurance stated that it was only a little over $300 to repair and my deduct was $500 so they closed the claim. I contacted all of the local glass repair places in the area and they agreed, $320 for a Non-OEM windshield!!! I checked around again for the cost including an '04 HD windshield. Well, they're a backorder item from Ford, cost $615!?!???? Cost with install - $680. Does anyone know if later or earlier models have identical windshields or a cheaper way to replace but maintain the SpecEdition look?

Erik, Just had a similar proble with my 03' model. My insurance is with USAA, with a $250 deductible. Original OEM here in Alaska is same price. Installer says he won't make as much as normal but will still perform the service just the same. Mine also began with a small (dime size) ding which was quickly repaired but when the Alaska winter temps kicked in fully it decided to stretch from one side to the other. That's when I looked into the replacement cost.
I assumed being in Alaska would be an issue finding an OEM in stock but luckily they had 2 on hand. USAA is a great auto insurance especially for military folks....check them out bro!

How'd you guess I was military? Or was that just a comment that USAA was good for military? Anyway, if anyone owns a special edition anything, DON'T GO WITH PROGRESSIVE!!!!! They replace with Non-OEM even though I insured a HD edition vehicle. I'm gritting my teeth so bad right now I better be careful or I'll find myself at the dentist tomorrow with cracked molars! HHHHHRRRRRGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!! Damn insurance companies, they're all full of BS anyway.

    Erik,

I looked up your profile and saw you are a USN CPO. I retired from the USAF last year as an E-9 at 30 years and remained in Alaska....my last duty station. I've been with USAA for 20 yrs and they have ALWAYS been tops in service. Saved me money as well. Sure there may be some cheaper companies but then you get second rate service in the end. My advice is switch to USAA.

I agree with hog, I have had USAA for 10 years and they have been very fair with their prices and helping with a windshield replacement on my 01 f150. I just hope they let me stay with them when I get out of the military in 2 yrs.

    Steak,

Once you have been a member with USAA you can stay with them even into retirement. I retired 1 Apr 04> Also any of your kids you may have started coverage for are grandfathered with USAA for as long as they wish to remain fyi....

that happened to me (hit by a rock) on the way home at Christmas. I got off the highway (first chance) and had someone fix it. A friend of mine had his crack in his and it cost $$$$$. I knew not to wait. Put in a regular windshield for now and do it right once they are not backordered.

I don't know if later model HD's have the same windshield as the 04's, but I'd definitely do what you had to do for the HD windshield. Just my $.02.

And there's a SV on this site who can get OEM Ford stuff.............Riverside Parts. Not sure what all he can get, but he's been very helpful to me in the past.

ONLY replace your Limited Edition Truck windshield with a correct Harley Replacement windshield.
I can get you 1, and have it UPS'ed to your home. Then have a local glass installer, install it for you. If you have a $500.00 deductible, you have no way around that. You should check into the cost difference between $50.00 & $500.00 comp/glass deductible.

Had mine replaced not too long ago. Check around with the different chains (think I used Triumph autoglass). A lot of them will cover part of the deductible. I had 250 deduct and they covered half of that so it cost me about 125 total.

What Ford dealer quoted you $615.00 for the glass? That is an insane markup. List price is $379.30 I sell these for $300.00 localy but could ship {not UPS on glass been there done that} not sure about the backorder thing. the last one I got was in November. Took 8 days to get.
If it's not BLOWN it must suck.

Pick me, pick me, I need one too. This will be my 4th, count it, 4th windshield in less than a year of owning this truck. 1) delaminating problem, ford replaced it. 2) Busted by some jerk in a parking lot. 3)Same thing happen as it did with 04bengalsfan, rock chip, and before i could get it fixed, crack, halfway across the windshield. I think with as many windshields as I've gone through, I may be the reason they're on backorder.

Randy, I have a question regarding H-D windshields and if I have your permission to call your cell phone, I discuss with you instead of typing all that stuff here.
