SERVICE ENGINE SOON -- OEM Number to Cross: P0402

My service engine light came on about a week ago. I stopped by AutoZone and had them to pull the code and they provided me with the info below. I cleared it by taking the terminal off the battery and it stayed off about a week. I searched the web and the majority say try replacing the DPFE Sensor(EGR pressure sensor) which Ford sells for about $130.

Let me know if anyone has experieced this and what you recommend. Also, if there is any harm driving it until I decide which path to take.

    ----------------------Info------------------------
The PCM has determined that there is excessive flow in the exhaust gas recirculation system.

    Definition
EGR system fault (Exhaust Gas Recirculation)
    Explanation
The ECM has detected too much flow on the EGR system
    Probable Causes
    1-EGR valve stuck open
    2-Failed EGR pressure sensor
    3-Failed EGR value

check the hoses to it...there are two hoses that connect to the bottom of it and then they run down and connect to the egr sensing tube...one of them might have popped off.

Also check the green hose that attaches to the top of the EGR valve and make sure it didnt come off or get burnt, broke damaged in anyway

I've checked those and they all looked fine. I'll take another look this afternoon. Thanks for the tip...

When I started up to leave work today, the SERVICE ENGINE SOON light was off.

Anyone know how these codes/lights work? Meaning, if I were to try to pull the code again now while the light is off would anything/history be there? If not, I guess I'll need to wait for it to reoccur before I try to trouble-shoot again.

If it comes on again do this:

hold down your odometer reset and simultaneoulsly turn the key to the on(but not start position).
when the odometer reads TEST, press the od button until you read a code that starts with dtc.

if it it the same code buy a new pressure sensor, clean the egr valve, or get a tune which will not only increase your perfrormance and fuel mileage but will turn off you egr and rear 02 sensors, paving the way for future mods :-)

OK it's back on, I have the following dtc codes:

    dtc 9318
    dtc 5284

I found these descriptions in another thread on this site:
    B1318 9318 Battery Voltage Low
C1284 5284 Oil Pressure Switch Failure

I recently put a new battery in, Optima.

I got code P0402 on Jan 3rd and replaced the battery on Jan 6th after I noticed it was turning over slow.

Are any of these related? Not sure where to start now.

I wish I could help... I put in a new Optima battery and have had no issues.

I'm sure Stew or other elders will chime in soon.
Yes officer... I am aware of how fast I was going!

    SUX2BU,

As soon as the light comes back on and I verify that the code is the same. I will check with you on getting the DPFE sensor.

    SUX2BU,

I sent you an email regarding the DPFE sensor. I've gotten the same code and I'm ready to replace it. Any tips on cleaning the EGR valve?
