Tinking of buying an SD diesel. Couple of ???

I'm thinking of selling my 02 and getting a SD. How are the 6.0 diesel motors for reliability and maint. Are you guys having any real issues that seem to be common with these. How much can you reasonably crank them up with a tune vs a kit like Bully Dog, Gale Banks, etc. Any insight you guys can shed would be cool. Oh, I'l be buying used probably 04-06. Any years there to avoid?

I've heard that the motors themselves are very durable (rods, pistons, etc)but they have a problem with soot caking up the EGR system and causing problems. You can easily crank them up 150 horsepower with a tuner, but eventually the head bolts stretch and cause a HG leak. The biggest problem with them is that to repair the motor you have to take the whole cab off the frame because the motor is too big to pull through the hood. Diesels are expensive to begin with, and the R&R labor is a killer. The 04-up is less prone to EGR issues, but its still a concern. The mechanicals will last you 300K, and maintenance is critical to preventing issues. Best bet is to get an extended warranty but plan to take it back to stock for any service visits or you'll void your warranty.

This is the opinion of the guy who tunes my truck here in Dallas, he has an 03 and has it modded. He had to take it in at around 80K for head gaskets. Ford let him buy aftermarket studs when they redid it. His warranty saved him about $12K in repairs. He tows car trailers from TX to the CO mountains and never passes up a chance to race someone, so his truck is a worst case example. Hope this helps.

I bought my 05 6.0 with 25k on it for $34k in june of 06.I haul a trailer every day and it has 75k on it now.to date the only problem I've had is egr and head gasket replaced.it was covered under the factory warranty.so far I'm totally thrilled and its one of my best investments.the key is to keep up with the service when its time.

I have an 06 6.0 with 60,000 on it and nothing but your ordinary maintenance so far. This is my daily driver and I pull trailers on the weekends. Very sturdy truck!

I took an 05 out for a test drive yesterday. I hit a hill and it seemed to be struggling some so I stepped into it and it kicked down 2 gears, spooled up close to 30 lbs and wouldn't shift till I let out of the throttle. For the next couple of miles it wouldn't shift unless I eased up on the throttle and then the waste gate would blow off boost and it would shift. WTF is up with that?

Something is wrong with the truck you test drove. I pull trailers through the Ozark Mountains every weekend in the summer and have no problems in and out of those hills. When I get on it the power is there also. I agree, go test a different truck and see what you think.

But the studs are a good idea to do if you plan on using a power adder on these trucks. I've heard from a few people that when they had to have their head gaskets done under warranty, the dealer went ahead and installed the head studs that the customer supplied.

By the way I love my 6.0. It's a 12/03 build truck. The earlier 6.0's were trouble ridden. Luckily mine hasn't been a problem child. 45k miles and no issues.

Well it looks like my 02 DSG hot rod goes away tomorrow and in its place will be a 2005 True Blue F250 SD long bed Harley. I was really looking for a short bed but this thing rides real nice. It has a spray in bed liner and an ARE tonneau and is in great shape with 50K miles on it. It doesn't have all those Aux switches though. What the heck are those for anyway? I'll post up some pics tomorrow when I get it home.

Anybody on this forum making their own fuel?

I wish my truck were a longbox. Sounds like a nice truck. The aux. switches are for hooking up add-ons extra lights ect. Some people use one of the switches to hook up to a high idle for when they leave the truck running, to prevent "wet stacking".

I don't make my own fuel, I just pay the $4.29 a gallon with a smile and save my crying for when I get in the truck LOL
