I have seen this with many brands and many types of cars and trucks...
Its mostly instalation problems.. not the filter it self...
As with any prosses take your time and make sure you check everything....
Happened to me once too because i was talking on the phone when I put filter back...lol
thank God I noticed it before truck left.....
Now i stop working when the phone rings...

    stay safe

well being that the O-ring thickness and crimp for the O-ring is done at the factory, there's zero installation problem in that regard in comparing the motorcraft to the mobile 1. Just mostly started this thread to show the better design of the mobile 1 over the motorcraft.

When I bought my truck I started using the K&N oil filter but then changed to the Mobil 1 just because the K&N would leak a little oil(the outer filtet will just get a little wet) and the Mobil 1 seems to seal real well and makes good match to the Mobil 1 oil.

    Josh's observation is right on!

Mobil 1 and K&N is right on! Just make sure to lube the seal beforehand on either. I like the K&N simply because of the 1" hex-nut that makes it very easy for an additional 1/4-turn beyond "hand-tight".

What about simply looking at the filter you take off to see if the gasket is there ?
