are there any advantages with this unit over let's say the Pioneer AVIC besides the fact that it's a Alpine. I think my Pioneer does all the same stuff and even plays videos from my Ipod. I'm not really a fan of having to buy a seperate unit for the Nav but i bet the sound quality is amazing

I just sold my AVIC Z2 for this unit.

The touchscreen on the Alpine's is so smooth. I would have to press the screen on my Pioneer several times before it would read sometimes. That was a major drawback for me. Plus the Z2 used an iPod interface so it was slow and hard to use. If you have the D3, no real advantages, except maybe a 7" screen and I believe you have to use the ipod to control ipod video, correct? The W505 controls from the iPod from the headunit. First one I've seen that does this.

Also, the bluetooth on the Pioneers is for the birds. Never could use it because a)I couldn't hear them because I had to turn the volume down so low to avoid echo or b) They couldn't hear me. The Alpine's is actually useable...

The separate unit for the nav is advantageous because you can take it when you fly somewhere for your rental, in your buddy's car, etc. Not a huge advantage for some people, but I think it is surely an advantage.

There are drawbacks such as preouts lower voltage, less equalization, etc. Those don't bother me as I don't have a THX certified system in my truck...

not exactly true. its actually a 1 3/4 din. is what they actually call it. in most books they tell you it wont fit. some modification is needed.

If you pull out the h/u of the truck some shaving may be needed on the top and bottom of where the radio sit. i just had to shave some off the top. It can still go back to stock and no one would ever know unless they striped it back apart to look.

Yea, it takes a little cutting on the top panel where it mounts... I have a Kenwood DDX812 with every option available (navi/r-cam/ipod/bluetooth/etc)

The sides are whats tricky, you have to take a trim plate(the outer ring) and cut it down for a seemless look to fill the sides with, here are a picture of what I am talking about, look around the edge

    Soon to be custom built...

yea i gave up on my trim bracket. one of these days i will flush it in there! the trim bracket is a joke. all it is a piece of plastic that you cut out to make a U type shape. and it goes down one side around the bottom and then back up the other side. you have to cut the top off for it to fit. and then if you ever take the panel off its a PITA to get it back on to where it wont affect the motorization of the H/U.

Damn, I wasnt even thinking when I typed that.

Mine trim ring and hvac controls are all molded in and pivot flawless.. Guess I was just picturing mine and figured a DD simply pops in.

I've posted pictures of it somewhere here...

I don't have any problems with mine...

I take the bezel off alot to work on stuff and never had a problem... the trim ring snaps into place... has never affected the motorization of the screen... maybe I am different or something...
