It really depends on how far you want to go. If your truck is your daily driver then I would go no bigger than a 6#lower.
Order of upgrades that I would do to get some more power out of her and keep her relatively safe.
1) CAI....Cold Air Intake
2) Exhaust...don't worry about headers right now, just do cats back
3) Lower Pulley...4# or 6#, make sure to change and gap new plugs if you do this
4) C&L True Flow Plenum
5) Single Blade Throttle Body
6) Oil Seperator
7) Good Tune
Then of course you will want to get a wideband (Air/Fuel) gauge and a boost gauge at minimum.
Then just remember....NO 2 GEAR KICKDOWNS and be careful in weather that is 60 degree's outside or colder.
My first mods I did on my 03 #907 was Magna Flow Exhaust, K&N Gen II CAI, D.M.R. Oil Seperator, 8# lower, and Tune by Torrie from Unleashed Tuning and she put down 396/494.
Of course many more things went on after that and she eventually blew up...so you can see what going on now by my signature.
Check the classifieds for anything you may want first, could save you some money.
Welcome to the club,
First, find a reputable Ford tuner that has worked on L's or these trucks. learn as much for your own sake so you can change your plugs, clean the intercooler, do some of your own wrenching.
get your truck looked at before you start on any performance mods.
clean the engine real well so it's easier to work on.
inspect the plugs and if necessary flush out any old fluids ( brake, tranny, radiator, S/C coolant, etc.)
1) I would do an L & S Oil Separator almost immediately.
2) A ported stock plenum and TB are relatively easy to find for sale here or on NLOC or other Ford forums.
3) Definitely a CAI.
4) Catback, or better yet, a highflow cat AND a catback.
5) a 6lb pulley and tune will really wake these trucks up, so keep that in mind when the time comes.
.36, NGK TR6 will be gapped right out of the box.
dont forget if doing the exhaust remove your two back cats.
if I take the back 2 cats out is there any o2 sensors I have to worry about and will it through a check engine light.
do not take the back two cats out. Take the FRONT two out. There are O2 sensors before & after the cats, but as long as you keep 2 of them in there it won't throw any code.
At the very least ditch the front two, as an improvement over that replace the rear two with high flows.
what about just doing midpipes with no cats?? and tunring the sensors off in the tune?
you can take out all the cats, turn off the O2 sensors. 1) Does your state have emissions inspections? 2) you'll have a slightly louder exhaust note. Are you still running the stock muffler?
You'll probably lose more back pressure than you want with ditching all 4 cats and not adding in 2 high flows. The truck will be pretty loud, may have more drone in the cab than before, and it'll also smell like it doesn't have cats, so be careful with the po-po.
Unless you're pushing 17-18 lbs of boost, or pushing into the 11's, I'd stick with 2 high flow cats. You'll pickup power just where you need it, not lose that bottom end torque, add just enough rumble to the exhaust, and still have a clean smelling exhaust.
does any body have the sizes if the pulleys in inches I bought a #8 and it didnt even get close and I was just wondering how big it should measure
