Today I pushed in on the cup holder under the a/c controls and it didn't pop out. I guess the spring mechanism broke.
Does anyone know how to fix this?

Yes officer... I am aware of how fast I was going!
Take it out and fish the spring out of the dash...
The metal spring has a flat part that is "plastic welded" in 2 sections on the back of the plastic assembly for the cup holders. You can get some little screws and screw it back on or do what I prefer and just drill a hole in the plastic and pop 2 rivets in there and she is as good as new!
Thanks.
How does it come out?
Just pull it all the way out. Then take a flat head, or letter opener or something like that and on the top there are two little tabs to push down, one on the left and one on the right...
If you get in front if it you can see them... just push one down and pull it a little bit, then push the other and it will come out.
mine was broken when I bought my truck, I just pulled it out and JB welded the spring back to the retainer, and clamped that into place over night, works good as new.
Been so long that I have push/pulled that useless thing out that I am now thinking that it should be converted to an MMC pod!
Well once again the NHTOC folks are AWESOME!
My cup holder was stuck pushed in about 3/8" and would not come out.
I stopped by my local Ford $tealership. The "service writer" told me I could contact parts to see if another drawer was still available.
He said they would probably have to remove the dash to get to it. To his credit though he was able to pull it out so it would slide.
I came home and reached for the keyboard and went right to NHTOC for some insight into fixing the problem and found this post.
The only thing I could not tell from the above posts was exactly what and where to find the "two release springs".
After feeling around a bit and at least having a clue from the above posts for what I was looking for I found the two spring clips.
I slid a very small screwdriver in the top of the cup holder tray. I found the spring clips pressed down on them and out it came.
Not being fortunate enough to have rivets I choose the JB weld and let it dry for 48 hours method. I'll let you know how it works out.
Here's a pic of the drawer, with arrows to help point out the release spring clips, the JB weld and small clamp to hold while drying.

Nice picture. That will really help out.
The whole thing took less than five minutes to do. I used one of those small pocket clip style flat screwdrivers to release the clips. I fished the metal spring out of the inside of the dash and found two small broken off plastic heads stuck in the rear metal spring clamp. I pushed them out and applied the JB weld to the back plastic. When I squeezed the metal clamp to the plastic some JB weld came through the two holes. This should help secure the rear metal spring to the plastic when it dries. If you are using the "Blind" JB weld method be sure to wipe the back plastic area and spring clamp (where the orange arrow is) with a moist alcohol pad and let it dry before applying the JB weld. There is grease on the side rails and I found a little grease on the back plastic area too.
Now it's time to sit back, relax and wait two days for the JB weld to dry before putting the cup holder tray back in the dash.
Looks like you already have the solution, same thing happened to mine, i just got two small screws and problem fixed for life.
