    Info on Superduties

Good day all...currently have a '03 100th Anniversary in my Ford stable. As times change, and family requirements change it looks like I will be selling my 5.4 and stepping up to a Powerstroke. I am looking in the direction of an F-350 HD powerstroke (my most recent purchase is that of a 33', 11,300 (gross) travel trailer). However, I have heard that the 6.0 strokes have issues. I was informed of a head gasket and head bolt issue...any thoughts? Information is, as always, greatly appreciated.

Yes 6.0's "can" have issues. Usually if you add a tuner, you can count on doing gaskets and studs. The other weak part is the EGR system and oil cooler. The EGR can get clogged or stuck shut. The oil cooler can spring a leak. Now with all of that said, as long as you play nicely with the 6.0 and do oil changes and fuel filters when they are supposed to be done...you should be good. Run andOASIS on the VIN to see what issue the truck has had.

    Beware of 2004 6.0's...some early 2005's... 2005 1/2 to 2007 you should be good.

2manytrucks, thanks for the input. I was aware, thanks to diesel magazines of the EGR issues. I had just found out about the head gasket issues, and as this was the first time I had heard of this, I was concerned. Thank you again for the information.

You can make a 6.0 near bullet proof but its costly. Stock head bolts allow the head gaskets to unload under boost because they lack enough clamping force. The 6.4 has a much thicker and shorter head bolt so they no longer have that problem just a bunch of other headaches a 6.0 doesnt. Replace the bolts with APR studs and stock head gaskets. Replace the egr cooler with a delete or cork yours off but you'll need a tune otherwise you'll get a check engine light saying the egr cooler is plugged and low egr flow detected. Install the updated dummy plugs in the oil rails, updated stand pipes, replace the oil cooler and oil supply screen to the IPR, replace the STC at the high pressure pump with the one piece unit. Carry a spare FICM at all times. After that fortune is spent a 6.0 aint all that bad.

I worked for a Tow company and we dealt with FORD as one of our dealerships we did work for.. the 6.0l are great motors as long as you take care of them.. as mentioned above is the main issues but that is because guys try to program them and get more power and pop stuff.. the 6.4s and the 6.7s are great motors.. The fleet of trucks we have range from 7.3s all the way up to the brand new ones.. They have 2 7.3s 2 6.0s and a 6.7

the only other problem with the 6.0s is the injectors, too low of a cetane rating and going too long between oil changes will cause a injector to fail in a heartbeat.. but as long as you take care of any motor and dont try to abuse it they will last for a long time.. all the trucks we had had 200K plus with only minor things braking here and there.. i would vouch for the Powerstrokes because i have owned a few myself and love them.. My next purchase will deff be a HD superduty..

I have a 2003 6.0, they are great motors and are much more reliable than the 6.4's, just as everyone said, take some time and maintain her well she will run long for you, the only thing I didn't see was a marine grade water and fuel separator, 6.0 injectors are VERY sensitive to water in the diesel, a water separator will save those injectors.

06 here, 160k mi , I love it, but there are some maintenance items you need to be aware of . Here is my parts list so far:
    4 injectors
    high pressure oil pump
    injector pressure sensor
    injector pressure regulator
    egr delete
    oil cooler
    rear end rebuild
    front wheel bearings
    fuel injection control module
    caterpiller elc coolant
blue spring fuel pressure regulator upgrade

the egr cooler goes bad and leaks coolant in to the cylinders causing head gasket failure. The coolant gets overheated in the oil cooler and clogs it up causing oil cooler and egr failure. If it stumbles when cold you have injector issues. I bought another 6.0 i would replace the oil cooler, do an egr delete, and use cat elc coolant before i even drove it.

It also has a cold air and 5 inch exhaust, next mod will be ported/o ring heads and intake with a-1 head studs.

    2006 6.0L here
I just replaced my first part at 85,000mi. My Alternator went bad on a trip from New Orleans to Tampa. I had to get it replaced with the factory 110amp because nobody had the 140amp in stock on a Saturday.

I changed factory tires to Nitto Terra Grapplers at about 75,000mi

I also did a good coolent flush at 20.000mi when I heard of the problems and another at 55,000mi, from what I have read after you get the shavings/particles out from the making of the engine you should be good.

other than that just normal oil and other mantance
