    Replacing an altenator

While driving back into town today my altenator crapped out and damn near left me stranded in a not so nice part of town. Of course, nobdy stocks this part so it will have to be ordered. While I was waiting I was trying to figure out how I was going to swap it out when it gets here. It doesn't look like they could have put that thing in a more inaccessable area.

My question is, what is the easiest and quickest way to swap out an altenator. I did a search on here and came up with nothing. Any help is appreciated.

Ok, that's twice I did a search on something and came up nothing and someone links one within minutes. What am I doing wrong? I digress.

That doesn't look too complicated but still not looking forward to doing it. I need to replace the coolant anyway.

    Thanks for the link.

No problem. I've been here a LONG time. Done plenty of searches.

    Sometimes less is more.

Are you going back with the stock 130 amp or upgrading to the higher 200 amp alternator?

Here are some prices from Rock Auto - careful on remanufactured vs. new.

Here are some upgraded ones but pricey.

It is a fairly straight forward process but very time consuming. Best to upgrade at time of change like Cayman ^^^ suggested.

Pretty straight forward like everyone has stated. Remove the idler bracket, unplug the alternator, then remove the two bolts. IIRC, I went with a higher voltage from a local shop here in So Cal with free shipping.

there's more than 2 bolts, but it's really not all that bad. just disconnect the battery 1st so you don't do any arc welding with the wrench when you take off the main stud.

Well it took me an hour to get the altenator out but about 15-20 minutes to get back in. Was thinking I was going to have to remove the top radiator hose, fan and/or fan shroud. Nope.

It's funny. It takes about an hour to get to, but less than 30 minutes to put it back together.
