Hmm a bit far, I'm in Camarillo.
I have a full set of spare coils in the garage...

Ya it is. Aww man I'm not asking for that.. How can I test mine? And its weird cuz the truck runs fine now it hasent done it again..
Reading through your post again, Without a misfire code I doubt it's the coils.
I would lean more towards a vacuum leak or a spark plug about to shoot out.

wouldn't it tick if the spark plug was about to shoot out? I had that happen on my n/a 5.4 and it ticked for quite some time before the plug shot out and it seemd to run great until the plug shot out...
I couldn't hear the tick at idle when my truck spat one out, the first thing I noticed was a stumbling idle...no codes.
I heard mine and it did it for day's, I thought it was my crappy leaking exhaust at the time.

Hahaha ya I thot I had a exust leak too.. Ses light just came on on the way home from dinner. Ima get my bros code reader 2moro ill post what codes I find.
Code reader gave me a p0401 . I read it is insufficient egr flow? What shuld I do? What with the egr would make it miss and the idle surge like it did. Then be fine the next day..

I'm not sure if it is like the 4v 4.6L in my fobra, but when the gasket on the EGR valve developed a leak my cold would run like complete **** on cold mornings and not hold idle very well until it warmed up like an old POS with a carb.
could be egr or dpfe acting up..
disconnect the green vac line from the top of the egr valve and just put the green vac line to the stud bolt on the egr valve itself and then take it for a spin..
So today I was trying to test the Egr valve found there was no vacuum on the green line on the top of the Egr at idle or steady rev. Then I found thit the green vacuum line had Ben melted closed by the egr pipe/tube.
so I guess the Eger valve got stuck open because it was melted Shut well going down the road well it was open that's what made it run like crap that 1 day and over night when the vacuum let off and it closed it ran fine
but I didn't drive it enough to throw a code because I was scared.
