Question About Polishing Around Flame Decals

I'm about ready to get out the Porter Cable and polish my 02 for the first time. My question for those who have done it before: Do I need to mask the flames, just stay back from them, or can I buff (carefully) over them?

    Thanks,

p.s. Hopefully I'll only need to use M205 with a white pad, but some areas like the hood and tailgate may need more. I have Ultimate Compound and orange pads, or should I try UC with a white pad first?

    Merlin....time to chime in here!

For the pads and product, I think it depends on how bad a shape your paint is in and what you are trying to correct, ie. swirls, overspray, orange peel, etc.

Are your pads microfiber or foam?

I've had great success with M100 too which isn't as nasty to work with as M105 but I think UC might do the job depending on the paint.

Wait till Merlin gets on as he is the master.

Good luck, as it sure will look a whole lot better afterwards!

If you are even slightly concerned then tape.

Try m205 with white first. If that's not enough then bump up to UC and orange followed with M205
