Going to be busy for the next week or two but I copied and printed the "shopping list". Doing a quick comparison I think I like the Meguiars or Griots. I like the handle being on top instead of the side. thanks for the help so far.

On the PC, Megs and GG 6" the first thing I do & recommend is removing the handle.
This way you can place your hand directly on the head of the machine for control.

Yeah that side handle just gets in the way anyway.

Doesn't that head get pretty hot?? When I was polishing Aluminum and Stainless steel between delivering loads back in the day....I never wanted to go near the grinder head barehanded...that sucker was virtually nuclear.

Course we were also using a 7" turning 8k rpm's and using a lot more pressure than what you use on paint I am sure...plus we used the edge of the pads, with the side handle pointed up, not the bottom of the pad with the side handle to the side, surely this is what made the heat in the head for us.

These machines are not really grinders. The modem Dual Action Polishers run cooler. I have never had the machine head feel hot.
I really like my hand covering the machine head. You can feel the downward pressure much better and feel the machine control.

I was reading another thread and noticed you recommend
    1) Griots Garage 6" Random Orbital
    1) Meguiars 5" backing plate

Is there a reason for using the Meguiars backing plate with the Griots Orbital?

The Megs 5" DA backing plate runs cooler and works better with microfiber discs.
It also work fine for foam pads etc but the main reason is the microfiber discs.
I really like working with the Megs mf discs they make short work of eliminating swirls.
The KEY is the speed OPM (Orbits Per Minute), down pressure and arm movement.

I'll pick up the Griots DA and Megs backing plates in the next few weeks. I have a white Expedition to practice on. I guess it's good and bad that it's white. You won't be able to see exactly how good or bad I'm doing. The HD is the first and probably last black vehicle I'll own. Nothing looks better when washed and waxed (especially yours) but here in NM it's hard to keep it that way. I can leave it parked in the garage and it'll get a 1/2" of dust on it then when I take it out we get 10 drops of rain that makes little mud puddles all over the truck. Do you ever use the California Dusters? They seem to work but I can just imagine the duster dragging the dust across the paint. I don't want to go through all of this work just to scratch it up again with one of those.

I use a Cali Duster (Never use the squeegee/blade).
New it comes very oily. The older they are the better. I only use it for light dusting.
The best thing to do is wrap it in newspaper for a week before using it.
This takes a lot of the oil out of the fibers so it does not leave streaks on the paint.
I've not been able to attribute any light scratches on the paint due to a Cali Duster.

For a weekend warrior I might suggest the Harbor Freight entry level DA. If you're like me it's "Do it once do it right" then get the GG 6" or PC.
    What about the Flex 3401?

I've had my meguiars g110 for maybe 7 years? It's been awesome and is very easy to use/control. I use it at least every 3 months to polish a full car, usually more often.

Another good machine. I have the Flex and the PC. I still prefer the PC, the Flex seems better though for the tougher jobs.
