    What to use and how

    Merlin or any other “Detailers”
Is there a quick how-to on what products to use for “paint correction”? I’m after a list of products to use and the order to use them in. A quick how to use would be nice but I have an old beater Expedition (white so it won’t show my screw ups too bad) to test on and to get my method down before I move on to the HD. I need to get rid of light swirl scratches mostly and orange peel.

To do paint correction you need a machine. I recommend a Dual Action (DA) for a newbie to the craft.

Let's start there. Do you have a polishing machine?

I have two DA's a 9-10" and a smaller 5-6" which I prefer to use. I also have a rotary but I've only tried to use it once on another old beater I used to have. I don't remember the brands.

Okay I was full of **** the 10" and 6" are orbital buffers not DA's. I do have a rotary but I would be too afraid to use that on the Harley. So, I guess I need to start from the beginning and get a good DA.

I didn't have a chance to take any pictures but the 5-6" is an MVP. The wife bought it for me as a gift one year either from Wal-Mart or Checker Auto Parts (now O'Reilly's).

Where is the best place to get a PC? I've been looking at the autogeek site.

When I got mine, I got a smokin deal on ebay for a new one. That was a few years ago though.

It sound to me like it's time to go shopping...

IMHO The Griot's Garage 6" is the best DA on the market (price point wise) a close second is the PC 7424xp and the classic Meguiar's G110V2
For a weekend warrior I might suggest the Harbor Freight entry level DA. If you're like me it's "Do it once do it right" then get the GG 6" or PC.

IMO The most important first investment is a Meguiars Mirror Glaze W67DA G110 DA Polisher 5 inch Backing Plate. A DA works best with 5" pads.

When you get a DA & 5" backing plate let me know and I'll (hopefully) point to in the right direction.

    To start I might suggest

Meguiars DMC5 DA Microfiber Cutting Discs, 5 inches
Meguiars D30016 DA Microfiber Correction Compound 16 oz.
    Lake Country Hydro-Tech 5 1/2 x 7/8 Inch Foam Pads 3 Pack
    1) Cyan 1) Tangerine and 1) Crimson
    CarPro Reflect Polish

Now orange peel is a different animal.
