    Rattle/Vibration

Anyone have any idea what this loud rattle/vibration sound is? It's louder than my exhaust and comes and goes when stationary and moving.

I have looked under the truck and can't find anything loose. When I hold the exhaust, it doesn't seem to go away.

What Brian said. a few years ago I chased a vibration for a few days. It ended up being a heat shield.

The cats can do that too if they are breaking up inside. More likely if you have aftermarket cats...

Thanks for the replies. I have a 3" exhaust system without cats. Still haven't found the rattle, but did discover the pumpkin is leaking where the drive shaft attaches to it.

Did you change the whole exhaust at the same time? Wondering if you had a cat failure at some point before and some debris ended up in the mufflers? Could also be a baffle broken loose inside the muffler, although I can't say I've ever seen that happen myself. Maybe tap on the mufflers with the truck off and see if it sounds like it's full of marbles? My after market cats came apart and made all kinds of racket. I know they blew completely clear but dumped everything into the mufflers from the tap test. I suppose it all eventually made its way out of the tailpipe, as it stopped rattling after a month or so - problem solved! I plan to replace them at some point as the sound got a little raspy for me. We don't have inspections here so I'm able to wait for them to go on sale (5 years and counting)

Bummer about the pinion seal. As long as it's not howling that's all it should be....

I got one of the Cannon "StainlessWorks" 3'' exhaust systems with long tubes and no cats. It was all changed out at at the same time. No howling with the pinion seal, just wet and splattered on the underside of the truck.

Now that all other possible causes have been eliminated, there can only be one reason. Pic # 2 illustrates the repair instructions.

I wish it was that simple. Got under the truck again today and still couldn't find anything loose or any clearance issues. There is plenty of room between the exhaust and the underside of the truck.

If I pull down hard on the exhaust, the rattle goes away. Still kinda hard to hear in the video. At about 6 seconds you can hear it best. Does the entire exhaust need to be loosened, refitted, and retightened?

Start with the support brackets make sure they are all tight and if that doesn't work start at the headers and work your way back and tighten everything. Look for any metal on metal. If you haven't done this already.
