Did you get the splash screen done?
Was the process any different than above?

    Can you post a pic?

I took your instructions above with the HD image then combined it with step 2 below to get my splash screen.

Step 2 – Enter the Opening Image Change screen
Insert the USB drive into the DDX9’s USB input and then press and hold the “VOL -” and “MENU”
buttons simultaneously and then press the Reset button (you will need a small object or use a pen to push this). Let go of the Reset button, but continue to
hold the “VOL-” and “MENU” buttons until the screen turns on and the “Custom Mode: Opening
    and Wallpaper” screen appears.

Here is what the final output looks like:

NOTE: Thanks for the info...This worked like a champ!
I tried quite a few things including the instructions from Kenwood.
I tried your instructions (above) and it worked the very first time!

Slowbra, Here's a couple of Head Unit (HU) screen pics per your request.
Both the GPS antenna extension and the Sirius/XM antenna are in the dash.
The panel above the glove box on the top of the dash (it's empty) comes up.

Notice the wire coming out of the ashtray lid. I can fold it under the ashtray lid and close the drawer.

Apple CarPlay - Press a couple of buttons on the HU to change from HDMI to CarPlay. Maps works from HU

Streaming HBO - HDMI is a feed. There is no control of the HBO app from the HU only the iPhone

Waze - Pic of Waze running on the HU

    Just a side note...to finish off the install I used a Metra Part # 95-5818 Ford truck Multi-Kit F-150
This gave a very close to factory look and caused the Head Unit to sit a bit higher and straighter.
NOTE: The top area behind the vent cover where the HU sits needed to be trimmed a bit for fitment.

The Cup Holder is a Belkin Cup Holder Phone Mount - Black (F8J168bt)

I've never seen a detachable face for a full 7 inch screen double din unit. They seem to come mostly with the single din units.
