How To: EM Grounding Kit Instructions

    EHRLICH MOTORSPORTS R a c i n g T e c h n o l o g y

EHRLICH MOTORSPORTS (EM) 5.4L Earth Grounding System Instructions

    Contents:
    - 1 wire brush
    - 1 applicator brush for paste
    - 1 anti-oxidation paste
    - 1 each of #0, #1, #2, #3, #4, and #5 wires
    - wire ties
    - 1 Positive battery terminal
    - 1 Negative Battery Terminal
    - 2 allen wrenches

    Tools Needed:
    - Large Phillips head screw driver
    - 5/16”-5/8” box end wrenches
    - Pliers
    - 5/16”-5/8” shallow sockets (3/8)
    - 3” and 6” extensions (3/8)
    - 3/8” drive ratchet
    - 1 spray can of brake parts cleaner
    - 1 roll of black electrical tape.

    PHOTO # 1:

***Make sure that in every step you thoroughly clean every bolt and every surface where you are attaching the grounding wires. Use the brake cleaner (except on painted surfaces) and the wire brush provided with your kit. After the spot has been cleaned apply some of the anti-oxidation paste before you attach the wires. Dirt and rust will decrease the performance of this product.***

***Do not remove any factory wiring unless specifically stated in the steps.***

Step 1: First, disconnect the factory battery terminals. Start with the negative terminal first and then remove the positive terminal. The wires from the negative factory battery terminal are connected to the firewall and the transmission. The wire running to the transmission is enclosed in a wire loom with other wires. For ease of installation, all you need to do is tape up the old negative battery terminal and secure with a wire tie to a location that is out of the way and will not allow the terminal to make contact with any positive wires. You do not have to disconnect the other ends of the battery terminal wires. Locate wire #0 from the EM Earth Grounding System and attach one end to the factory grounding point on the transmission that is circled in red in photo 2. Leave the factory wires there and attach the new wire with them. You will need to slide under the passenger side of your truck right behind your front wheel. You should be able to find this wire easily. You can leave the other end loose for now. (Be certain all surfaces are clean and that the paste has been applied to the aluminum surface.)

    PHOTO # 2:

Step 2: Locate wire #1 from the EM Earth Grounding System and attach one end to the factory grounding point on the firewall that is circled in red in photo 3. You can leave the other end of this wire loose as well.

    PHOTO # 3:

Step 3: Locate wire #2 from the EM Earth Grounding System. Attach one end of this wire to the firewall with wire #1. The other end of wire #2 will jump across to the other factory ground wires on the firewall that are shown by the red circle in photo 4. There are two ground points very close to each other here. One is the ground wire from the old negative battery terminal – this is not the spot you want.

    PHOTO # 4:

Step 4: Locate wire #3 from the EM Earth Grounding System. One end of this wire will attach to the firewall with wire #2. The other end of wire #3 will jump across to the factory ground strap on the firewall that is shown by the red circle in photo 5. The wire is designed to run behind the black cover you see there on the firewall.

    PHOTO # 5:

Step 5: Locate wire #4 from the EM Earth Grounding System. Attach the end of this wire with the smaller eyelet to the factory ground strap that is circled in red in photo 5. The other end of this wire will attach to the bolt that is shown by the red circle in photo 6. This bolt is located under the coolant reservoir. It is securing the large accessory bracket directly to the engine head.

    PHOTO # 6:

Step 6: Locate wire #5 from the EM Earth Grounding System. One end of wire #5 will attach to the accessory bracket with wire #4. The other end of wire #5 will attach to the other side of the accessory bracket to the bolt that is circled in red in photo 7. Route wire #5 along the coolant hose and behind the supercharger drive belt. Use a couple of the wire ties that have been supplied with your system to secure the wire to the coolant hose at the points indicated by the red arrows. For engines without superchargers all the points are the same and just make sure that the wire is secured so that it will not contact the belts.

    PHOTO # 7:

Finish: Double check all of your new attachments and make sure they are all tight – do not over tighten the smaller 10mm bolts. You can reattach the battery cables now starting with the positive cable first and then the negative cable. You will now need to connect the other ends of wires #0 and #1 to the new negative battery terminal. Insert the ends of the wires into the receptacles in the terminal and use the 3mm Allen wrench to tighten the set screws. The 6mm Allen wrench is used with a 12mm wrench to tighten the new terminals to the battery posts.

You’re done! Now go for a test drive and enjoy the better performance!

thanks hoff! kinda ironic though because this how-to is actually off the EM's actual instructions pdf but they had a lot of typo's and the pics were formatted kinda all over the place, so this version is slightly updated and formatted a bit easier to read for guys installing the kit or making their own kit and using EM's layout. 99% of my how-to's are 100% my own though Kinda enjoy going back and writing up the how-to on mods, almost like getting to do the mod all over again! haha

he did it on his truck and put up pics, but i believe they were lost when the galleries crashed. he was one of those few who kept extremely dilligent attention to his mpg and reported a 1-2 mpg gain with this kit on his truck, and he put a crap load of miles on his for work.

*edit* ah luckily RobW used the attachment feature, so his pics are still saved!
