Question Theft theft theft flashing while trying to start

    Anyone experience this before?

While turning over the ignition today it didn't start. I tried a couple more times then noticed the red THEFT light flashing while it was turning over. So I pulled the key out and flipped it over to the other side and it started. I tried it again when I got home but it didn't repeat. This is the first time this has happen for me. My key has a crack in the black plastic. Otherwise, it looks fine.

It happened a 2nd time so something else is going on.

The engine turns over but it won't start. Its not running hot or anything. No check engine light either.

I raised the hood and let it set for about 5 minutes then it started up on the first crank.

    Anyone experienced this??? Any recommendations???

throwing any codes? I'd say it's a PATs problem. truck isn't recognizing the key
Based on what you said- "crack in key" I'd try the spare key, assuming you have one.

also, if you don't have a 2d spare key make sure you get one after you figured current problem out.
with two good keys you can program another one yourself. with only 1 good key, it's a stealership job $$$$

Not the battery or starter since it turns over just fine even though it didn't start. Also, no codes or check engine light.

Pulled out the second key after the first incident this morning and same problem occurred this evening using the second key.

Will take it to the dealership to see what they find. But I'll drive it a bit more as I don't like to go to the shop with a transient issue.

    Nope, no aftermarket alarm.

Did some research and will try to narrow things down before going into the dealership:

    1. When I turn the key switch the "THEFT" indicator should turn off after about 3 seconds. I'm going to watch this for a while to see if there is a problem with the systems.
    2. Found some tips on youtube:

I checked the ones inside today.

I don't remember seeing in the manual that there was one under the hood for the theft system, but I'll recheck...

    I'm still seeing this issue.

I found this process online that allows me to start the truck when this happens:

    Reset instructions PATS

    • This has reset instructions when you get to the point where she turns over but won't start.... re-syncing the pats key anti theft instructions....

If it’s the PATS system......key out of ignition....put key in and turn on but do not start........look at theft light....should be blinking fast.....wait 30 to 45 seconds or until it starts to blink slow or goes out.......turn the key off and remove it from the ignition.........wait 15 seconds....turn key on.....do not start....look at theft light.....should be blinking slow......normal mode.....when wait to start light goes out it should start normal

Replace the PCM and fuel pump relay. The flashing theft indicator is usually a sign that the PCM didn't power up. It's also accompanied by dashes in the odometer most of the time. If this does not fix it. Replace the PATS ring.
